This guide covers what actually changes by area in Thailand, and how to compare homes in Bangkok, Chonburi (Pattaya and Sriracha), Rayong, and Chiang Mai.

"Near me" is a starting point, not the answer

Distance matters for visits, and for getting to a hospital quickly if care needs rise. But the nearest home is not automatically the right one. A home five minutes away that offers only daytime nursing cannot safely take a parent who needs a 24-hour nurse. A slightly further home with the right care level, staffing ratio, and equipment is the better placement every time.

So use "near me" to draw the map, then filter by the things that decide safety and fit: care level, nursing cover, ratio, licensing, and cost. Our main guide to nursing homes in Thailand walks through those filters in full.

What changes by area

A nursing home near you will differ by region. Thailand's elder-care market clusters in a few places, each with a different character.

Bangkok
The widest choice and strong medical backup: top private hospitals minutes away, which matters for higher-dependency and post-surgery cases. Homes range from modest city residences to premium facilities. Traffic is the trade-off: "near" in Bangkok is measured in travel time, not kilometres, so factor in how long a hospital transfer or a family visit really takes.
Chonburi — Pattaya, Sriracha, Mueang Chonburi
The Eastern Seaboard's main hub for expat-oriented elder care: an established foreign community, good private hospitals around Sriracha and Pattaya, and an easy drive from Bangkok. It's where NursingHomesThailand's verified homes are concentrated today, from budget shared rooms to premium ensuite care. For many expat families this is the first place to look.
Rayong
Next along the coast from Chonburi, Rayong and Ban Chang have a growing retiree and expat community and work as a natural extension of the Eastern Seaboard care cluster. Choice is thinner here than in Chonburi today, so verification matters more. Tell us if you're looking in Rayong and we'll confirm what's genuinely available.
Chiang Mai
A well-known destination for longer-stay and resort-style elder care, including dementia-specialist and premium homes. Cooler, calmer, and popular with Western families for extended recovery and retirement-linked care. Costs run from the low tens of thousands to premium.
Elsewhere
Homes exist around Hua Hin, Phuket and other centres, but choice thins out and verification matters more the further you go from the main clusters.

Comparing nursing homes near you

Once you have a shortlist in one area, compare on the things that don't show up in a brochure:

  • Care level match — can they take your parent's tier today, and hold them if needs rise?
  • Nursing cover — 24-hour registered nurse, or daytime only? Match it to the tier.
  • Ratio, including nights — caregivers per resident on the actual night shift.
  • Hospital distance — real transfer time to the nearest capable hospital.
  • Language — an English-speaking contact and staff who can follow care instructions, for expat families.
  • All-in cost — what the monthly price includes, and what's billed on top. See our cost guide.

Doing this from abroad

If you're choosing from another country, you can't rely on a website and a phone call. What helps: a shortlist filtered to homes that can actually take your parent's care level, a video walk-through of the real rooms and staff, clear written confirmation of the ratio and nursing cover, and an independent set of eyes on site. That's the gap NursingHomesThailand exists to close: a neutral platform that holds no single home's interest, only the match.
